Hello, Mother . . . I’m glad your leg is feeling better and you’re able to move around more easily. I tried getting into the house the other day, but the front door lock had been changed. Did you change the lock again? . . . I guess it must have been my key, then, the one that always sticks. I fixed the water heater, so it should be working properly now. I also looked at the roof. I believe you’re mistaken there’s a leak there . . . Yes, I do. But if you really want me to, I’ll look at it again next week. I met that woman again, Mother . . . The one on the jogging path . . .Yes, I did. I told you I met a woman while jogging near the harbor. I forget things too sometimes, only in my case it’s probably from the medication I’m taking . . . I really wish you‘d stop pestering me about that, about finding a good well-paying job. The job market is very tight right now and asking me about it all the time won’t make finding one any easier . . .Yes, Dr. Wiener is being helpful, but there’s only so much she can do. What I’ve discovered recently is, at the end of the day, I have to help myself. I also need to stay positive and not worry too much, like now, when I’m having trouble finding a well-paying job and a new girlfriend. I also have to take more shots on net . . . It’s advice I got from a neighbor. Like in a hockey game, he said, I have to take shots on net or I won’t find a new girlfriend. When I was at the house, inspecting the water heater and the roof, were you playing bridge with Mrs. Underhill? . . . That’s fine; I mean, it’s fine to have a good friend, like Mrs. Underhill, who’s reliable and you can play bridge with. I’m learning that now. I’m learning that, next to health, a good job, and a steady girlfriend, friendship is the most important thing a person can possibly have, even just to have lunch or play bridge with occasionally . . . Of course, I’ll try to call you again . . . The day after tomorrow, and if for some reason I don’t call then, I’ll call soon afterward… Please don’t say unkind things like that, Mother, as that was the problem when I lived at home. You insulted me a lot, and it started to make me angry . . .

In the park the next morning the puzzle is asking for a four-letter word for “pastoral piece.” I write in ACRE, feed the pigeons for a while, then return to the puzzle.

Around eight o’clock, Mrs. Crowley arrives with her new walker. A minute or two later, the kid I saw while bringing Jesus down to the car appears too, only now he’s carrying a Chihuahua instead of a backpack.
